I had surgery back in 2009 in Portugal to remove an overactive parathyroid gland. It was not successful. Meanwhile I had more stones growing in my kidneys, osteoporosis and high blood pressure due to my overactive parathyroid gland. As Idid not want to go through another painful exploratory surgery, my endocrinologist in Portugal recommended that I should go outside Portugal and provided me with some names. Dr. Inabnet, head of the Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, was number one on his list. I decided, with the help of my husband Charlie, to contact Dr. Inabnet and explain my situation. From the very first moment we traded emails from Portugal, back and forth, I felt I was in very good hands.
Dr. Inabnet was committed to help and did everything to accommodate me, knowing that I would be flying in from Lisbon, Portugal to New York. Even better, he said he would work with his team of doctors at Mt. Sinai Hospital to take care of growing tumor in my neck and my kidney stones. So I flew to NY on a Sunday and met Dr. Inabnet the next day at the Parathyroid Center. In talking with him and his understanding my health history and current complications, I knew he was the right person and I could trust him. He explained everything.
After further tests Dr. Inabnet was able to locate overactive parathyroid gland on the scan. You don´t know how thankful I was and how safe I felt through all of this. He conveyed a lot of confidence which I needed to have. He also arranged to have his colleague, Dr. Owen, remove my neck tumor at the same time as the parathyroidectomy and had Dr Samadi of Mt Sinai look at my growing kidney stones. Even though New York City was paralyzed by Hurricane Sandy, my surgery went ahead as scheduled on October 31st. Dr. Inabnet and Dr. Owen performed the two surgeries back to back, removing my parathyroid gland in 25 minutes and then removed the tumor in my neck. And through it all, emails were being sent to my family in Portugal at every stage of the two surgeries as it was happening to inform them of the progress! Of the ten emails sent out by Mount Sinai, here´s my favorite that all my family received while I was still under general anesthesia in the operating room! FROM: firstname.lastname@example.org
